Former Sporting CP manager Paulo Bento will replace Carlos Queiroz as manager of Portugal. The 41 year old manager has signed a deal till 2012 with the Portuguese FA. Paulo Bento was a former Portuguese international with 35 caps to his name.
Paulo Bento now faces the difficult task of resurrecting Portugal’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

7 Comments »BASEL: Portugal was unable to recover from a German blitzkrieg that saw the Germans with an early two goal lead. The Portuguese fought back only to come up one goal short of tying the match.
Bastian Schweinsteiger put the Germans in front with an awesome team goal that was started with Lukas Podolski and Michael Ballack. Podolski played an undefendable pass on the ground that Schweinsteiger was able to run on to and put in the back of the net.
Germany quickly doubled their lead with a Miroslav Klose goal. The towering striker was left wide open on a free kick and Schweinsteiger picked him out for the second goal.
Portugal fought back and Cristiano Ronaldo fired off a dangerous shot that Lehmann could only deflect to Nuno Gomes who put the ball into the back of the net.
After half time it was once again the Germans who showed more class. Another set piece taken by Schweinsteiger found Michael Ballack who put the ball into the back of the net with his head after slightly pushing off Paolo Ferreira.
Portugal continued to fight and were eventually rewarded with a conselation goal from Helder Postiga.
The final score was 3-2 in favor of the great Germans.

Despite finishing first in their group, Portugal will be upset to be playing against an elite team in the first knockout round.
GENEVA: Cristiano Ronaldo found himself on the score sheet for the Portuguese as they were able to brush of a brave effort from the Czech Republic.
Deco started off the scoring with a scrappy goal that was started by Cristiano Ronaldo’s failed attempt to dribble past Petr Cech. Less than 10 minutes later the Czech’s were even with a set piece goal from Sionko.
Cristiano Ronaldo was able to score the game winning goal in the second half by driving a hard low shot past Petr Cech into the back of the net.
Ricardo Quaresma got the final goal of the match after fine work from Cristiano Ronaldo to set him up. Cristiano Ronaldo was able to launch a counter attack that saw Ricardo Quaresma wide open near an open goal. Ricardo Quaresma made no mistake and calmly sealed the 3-1 result in favor of the Portuguese.
With the two victories, Portugal have secured a spot in the knockout rounds. Portugal’s last match of the group stage will be against the Swiss.

The former AC Milan superstar has said that the team can go all the way to the finals and win unlike what happened in Euro 2004 with the shocking loss to Greece.
Rui Costa backed his reasoning by saying that the team is better prepared and more respected now than ever before. He feels that there has been a change of mentality and that the players must think as a team instead of as individuals.
Lastly, Rui Costa noted that a lot of the future success of Portugal will depend on Cristiano Ronaldo maintaining his outstanding form that saw him score 41 goals in all competition for Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo was active throughout the game and came close to scoring.
Cristiano Ronaldo took a free kick and drove it to the far post. As the ball was flying to the back corner of the net, the Turkish goalkeeper handled the ball just enough to keep it from going in.
The Portuguese got on the score sheet with an outstanding goal from Pepe. He completed a one two with Nuno Gomes and placed the shot in the back of the net.
The game was close for a long time it took injury time for Portugal to strike again. Raul Meireles was able to place a shot into the back of the net after fantastic work from João Moutinho.
Portugal and the Czech Republic are on top of Group A with 3 points each. The better goal differential from Portugal puts them in sole possession of first place. Switzerland and Turkey are on the bottom without a point.
Portugal’s next match will be on June 11th against the Czech Republic and will also be played at Stade de Genève.

Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering from leg muscle problems and will sit out the match on the advice of Portugal squad doctor Henrique Jones. Nani, another Manchester United player, is set to miss the match as well with the same injury.

The entertaining and open friendly at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich ended disappointingly for Cristano Ronaldo and his Portugal squad. Things started looking positive for Portugal after 76 minutes as the impressive Ricardo Quaresma smashed the ball into the back of the net from a Nani cross. However, shortly after the Portugal goal, Italy was able to regain their two goal advantage as Fabio Quagliarella made it 3-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo put in a solid performance and almost got on the scoresheet on a few occasions. In the 41st minute, Cristiano Ronaldo hit a trademark swerving and dipping free-kick that was saved by the brilliant Marco Amelia. Moments later the Portugese had a great chance to score on a three on one counter attack; however, Ricardo Quaresma overhit a pass to Cristiano Ronaldo and the danger passed. The last chance for Cristiano Ronaldo came about ten minutes before the game ended. Cristiano Ronaldo once again had the chance to score with a well struck freekick; however, Marco Amelia came up big once again and was able to stop the strike.
