Ronaldo and Rooney smash Newcastle

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney
NEWCASTLE: Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney both got on the scoresheet twice as Manchester United defeated Newcastle 5-1. Manchester dominated the entire match similarly to their last meeting with Newcastle that ended 6-0 for United.

Cristiano Ronaldo assisted the first goal after he beat his defender and crossed the ball to the far post, where Wayne Rooney was able to coolly tuck it into the back of the net. Cristiano Ronaldo took things into his own hands when he clinically finished his chance for his 20th league goal right before half time. About ten minutes into the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo was at it again. This time he received a pass but slipped on the grass and lost the ball; however, Nani fought for it back and Michael Carrick passed the ball back to Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo took the ball and beat one man easily, then he dribbled by the goal keeper and put the ball in the back of the net as the Newcastle defenders put in a last ditch effort to prevent Cristiano Ronaldo’s 21st league goal. Soon after, Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted and received a standing ovation from the visiting United fans.

Ten minutes from time, Newcastle then was able to pull one goal back. However, Wayne Rooney ended any Newcastle hopes as he curled a shot from outside the box into the far side of the goal. The scoring was rounded off by Saha in injury time as the striker was able to receive a pass from Wayne Rooney and smash a low shot into the back of the net to put the score at 5-1. The next United match will be away against Fulham on March 1st, 2008.

Late Tevez goal levels United and Lyon
LYON: Manchester United was able to escape France in decent position to advance to the next stage. Karim Benzema, French football’s finest young talent whom Manchester United has expressed interest in recently, scored against the run of play putting Lyon is great position for a big upset.

Cristiano Ronaldo was lively in the first half and was able to draw bookings for Anthony Reveillere and Kim Kallstrom. Anthony Reveillere’s booking means that he will miss the return leg at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo had the last good chance of the first half when he out leaped his man and headed the ball over the goal. In the 54th minute, Karim Benzema gave Lyon the lead with a low driving shot that went in off the post.

Ten minutes later, Carlos Tevez came on the pitch for Paul Scholes. Manchester United took control of the match and Cristiano Ronaldo had a great opportunity that Gregory Coupet was somehow able to get his fingers on. Manchester United piled on the pressure and Michael Carrick saw his shot cleared near the Lyon goal line. The pressure finally paid off with about three minutes left to play. Carlos Tevez smashed the ball into the top of the net after Nani put in a cross that troubled the Lyon defense. Carlos Tevez’s late goal clearly swung the momentum on United’s favor as the next match will be played at Old Trafford.

Manchester United 1 Manchester City 2
MANCHESTER: United suffered their second derby defeat of the season as Darius Vassell and Benjani Mwaruwari scored first half goals that proved to be enough to take all the points. Michael Carrick scored a late goal that gave United hope; however, it was not enough and the better team won on the day. Cristiano Ronaldo put in an average performance and at the end of the day had nothing to show for his effort. Overall the midfield was disorganized and chances were hard to come by. The next match for United is at Old Trafford against high flying Arsenal in the FA Cup on February 16th.

Cristiano’s Portugal beaten 3-1 by Italy

ZURICH: Luca Toni, Andrea Pirlo and Fabio Quagliarella scored the three goals that sunk Portugal today. The entertaining and open friendly at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich ended disappointingly for Cristano Ronaldo and his Portugal squad. Things started looking positive for Portugal after 76 minutes as the impressive Ricardo Quaresma smashed the ball into the back of the net from a Nani cross. However, shortly after the Portugal goal, Italy was able to regain their two goal advantage as Fabio Quagliarella made it 3-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo put in a solid performance and almost got on the scoresheet on a few occasions. In the 41st minute, Cristiano Ronaldo hit a trademark swerving and dipping free-kick that was saved by the brilliant Marco Amelia. Moments later the Portugese had a great chance to score on a three on one counter attack; however, Ricardo Quaresma overhit a pass to Cristiano Ronaldo and the danger passed. The last chance for Cristiano Ronaldo came about ten minutes before the game ended. Cristiano Ronaldo once again had the chance to score with a well struck freekick; however, Marco Amelia came up big once again and was able to stop the strike.
